UCAT, UCAS and the Timeline

Every year, some of the most motivated applicants to UK medicine lose a full year before they write a single line of their application. The reason is almost always the same. They start in September, and by September the most important door has already closed.

The enquiry that prompted this

An enquiry reached us this month from a student who had just finished school and wanted to begin Medicine in the UK in 2027. The motivation was clear. The subject was clear. The timing was not. By the time the form arrived, the UCAT booking deadline for 2027 entry had already passed.

Nothing about the student's ability had changed. The calendar had.

Two systems, two calendars

Applying to medicine in the UK means working with two separate systems at once. UCAS handles the application itself. The UCAT Consortium runs the admissions test that most medical schools require. The two do not share deadlines, and missing either one ends the cycle.

The UCAT Consortium states that it makes no exceptions to its deadlines, and it recommends booking a test in July or August. September slots fill quickly, and anyone who books late has little room to reschedule if something goes wrong on the day.

What the UCAT is

The UCAT is a computer-based aptitude test used by a consortium of UK universities to select applicants for medicine and dentistry. It is sat once per cycle, at a Pearson VUE test centre in the UK or abroad. The total score runs from 900 to 2700, the Situational Judgement section is reported as a band from 1 to 4, and there is no negative marking.

Schools use the result differently. Some set a threshold after results arrive. Some rank applicants on it. Several rank international applicants on the UCAT alone. The BMAT, which some universities used until recently, is no longer in use anywhere in the UK.

The UCAS side starts earlier than any other course

For most undergraduate courses, the UCAS deadline falls in January. For Medicine it is 15 October. By then the personal statement, the reference and the predicted grades all need to be in place, and applicants can use up to four of their five UCAS choices on medicine.

What international applicants add to the list

• Qualification recognition. A levels and the IB are widely accepted. National qualifications vary, and some medical schools do not accept them for direct entry.
• English language. Medical schools usually ask for a high IELTS score, commonly 7.0 or above, with minimum scores in each skill.
• Limited places. The number of international places on medicine courses is capped, so competition for them is sharper than the headline figures suggest.
• Funding. International fees for medicine are among the highest in the UK, across five or six years, and need to be planned before the application, not after the offer.

Why preparation has to start earlier

Working back from 15 October shows where the real start line is.

For 2027 entry, that means serious preparation should have begun in the first months of 2026. The subject choices that make medicine possible were made even earlier.

When the window has already passed

Missing the UCAT is not the end of a medical career. It changes the question from how to apply this year to which route and which year. The options are the next cycle, a small number of schools that do not use the UCAT, or a related degree followed by graduate entry. Each carries a different cost and a different timeline, and the right one depends on the student's qualifications and funding position.
