Married applicants ask this early and are usually given one of two wrong answers: that it is impossible, or that it is automatic. Neither is right. Family reunification during studies is provided for in German law, and the conditions are demanding enough that many student applications fail on them.
The rule itself
The Federal Foreign Office sets out the position plainly. Reunification for the family of a foreign student is usually considered only where the student holds a residence permit, where the marriage already existed when that permit was granted, and where the stay is expected to exceed one year. On top of that, the student must be able to support themselves and their family without recourse to public funds.
That last condition is the one that decides most cases.

The part that makes it worth doing
A spouse who arrives through family reunification receives a residence permit that carries unrestricted access to the labour market. No separate work permit is needed and the work is not capped in the way a student's own working hours are.
This changes the household arithmetic. The student is limited in how much they can work during term. The spouse is not. In many cases the spouse becomes the main earner while the student finishes the degree, and that is a legitimate and common arrangement rather than a loophole.
Why it is harder for some students than others
The income test does not treat all applicants the same, because it looks at the household's actual means rather than at the student's status.
A doctoral candidate with a research contract, or a graduate who has moved onto a skilled work permit, demonstrates income straightforwardly. A master's student living on a blocked account often cannot, because the account was calculated for one person and part-time student work does not close the gap.
This is why the sequencing matters. For some couples the realistic route is not to apply during the degree at all, but to finish, move to a work permit, and apply from that position. It is slower on paper and faster in practice.
Timing
Processing commonly runs to several months, and in some countries the wait for an appointment is itself the longest part. Where a couple intends to be together from the start of the degree, the reunification file has to be prepared alongside the student application rather than after arrival.
Applying after arrival is possible and often more realistic, because housing and finances are settled by then. The trade-off is time apart, and it is worth deciding which one you are choosing rather than discovering it.
Before you plan around this
- Confirm the marriage documentation will be recognised, including translation and legalisation
- Establish the income figure the local authority will apply, since it is calculated from household need rather than a single national number
- Check the language requirement and whether an exemption applies to your case
- Decide whether to apply during the degree or after moving to a work permit, and plan the finances for that choice
The right to work is the easy part. Meeting the conditions to arrive is the work.
