Yes, applications to Oxford and Cambridge close on 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time for 2027 entry. But treating that date as the finish line is how most applications come apart, because two of the three hard requirements sit on either side of it. One closed in September. The other runs into November.
The sequence, not the deadline
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 28 September 2026 | Registration closed for admissions tests taken through UAT-UK, including TARA, TMUA and ESAT |
| 12 to 16 October 2026 | The admissions test sitting |
| 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK | UCAS deadline. Application, personal statement and school reference all have to be in |
| 22 October 2026, 18:00 UK | My Cambridge Application and transcript, for Cambridge applicants |
| 10 November 2026 | Written work deadline, for Oxford courses that require it |
| 16 November 2026 | Admissions test results |
| December 2026 | Interviews |
| 12 January 2027 | Oxford decisions |
| 27 January 2027 | Cambridge decisions |
The date most applicants find out about too late
Test registration closed on 28 September, more than two weeks before the UCAS deadline. For a course that requires a test, missing that registration is not a setback within the application. It ends it, because the test cannot be sat and the application cannot be assessed without it.
The same pattern applies to the tests administered separately. UCAT registration closed in mid-September and LNAT a day earlier. A student who decided in early October to apply for medicine or law this cycle did not have a late option. They had no option.
If that is where you are now, the honest answer is that this cycle has closed and the useful work is on the next one. That is not a soft landing, but it is better than discovering it in December.
What 15 October actually requires
Three things have to be complete by 18:00, not merely started: the UCAS form, the personal statement in its three-question format, and the school reference. The reference is the part outside your control, which is why schools usually set an internal deadline a week or two earlier.
One constraint catches people every year. You cannot apply to both Oxford and Cambridge in the same cycle. One or the other.
What happens after you submit
Cambridge. A second form arrives by email once the UCAS application is in. My Cambridge Application is due on 22 October at 18:00, along with your transcript. It is separate from UCAS and it is not optional.
Oxford. Several courses require academic written work, due to the college by 10 November, with a limit of around 2,000 words per piece. That limit rules out submitting a full extended essay unmodified, which is what many applicants assume they can use.
Both. Interviews run through December and decisions arrive in January.
Why the timeline punishes late starters
Oxford received more than 23,000 applications for roughly 3,300 places in a recent cycle. Selection happens across three separate filters: the file, the test and the interview. Each has its own preparation and none of them can be done well in the week before it falls due.
The test is the clearest example. It is sat the week after the UCAS deadline, which means preparation runs while the personal statement is being finished. A student who starts in September is doing two demanding things at once. A student who started in the summer is doing one.
If you are planning for 2028 entry
Work backwards from the test registration date rather than from the UCAS deadline, because that is the earliest hard point in the sequence. In practice the course and the test are decided by the summer, registration happens in September, and the personal statement is drafted before term starts rather than during it.
- Decide the course first, then check whether it requires a test and which one
- Check whether written work is required and what the word limit is
- Confirm who is writing the reference and when your school needs the application
- Register for the test as soon as registration opens, not when it closes
- Treat December as interview preparation time rather than application time
Checking the current position
Dates move every cycle and each course sets its own requirements. Take them from the university and from UCAS directly rather than from a guide, this one included.
15 October is not the end of the application. It is the point at which the rest of it becomes visible.

Is it the writing, or the decision?
We start with a short form. Six questions, two minutes. Which of the two needs work is usually clear on a first read.
